Working Tax Credit is a means tested benefit for low paid families and for disabled people with or without children who work at least 16 hours a week, and for low paid people without children who work at least 30 hours per week.
Child Tax Credit is for families with at least one child under 16 or under 19 and still in full time education. The amount depends on the age of the children.
To qualify for Child tax Credit claimant must:
Be aged over 16
Under 19 and in full time or advanced education
Under 18 and registered for work/training
Who can claim Working Tax Credit?
- Be a resident in the UK
- Be working in remunerative employment for 16 hours per week or more and which is expected to last for at least 5 weeks
- Have one or more dependant children living with him/her for whom he or his partner is receiving child benefit.
The partner must jointly have less than £8,000 in savings, investments or capital.
The form can be completed by either the claimant or the claimants partner regardless whether they are both working.
The first stage is to ring 0845 300 3900 and ask for a working and child tax credit claim pack.
Claimants will be required to give details and evidence of all their income, savings and circumstances in addition to details of work and any childcare fees.
In most cases claims will be dealt with within 14 days of the Tax credit office receiving all information and evidence, which has been requested.
